Imagine girls in long dresses walking these halls long ago. We are standing before the Colégio de Santa Inês. It is more than just a school. It is a landmark with a rich history intertwined with São Paulo’s cultural evolution.

Founded in 1907, Colégio de Santa Inês began as a Catholic school for girls. The Instituto das Filhas de Maria Auxiliadora managed it. This was the female arm of the Salesian Congregation. The school’s location in Bom Retiro is significant. The neighborhood itself is a melting pot of cultures and beliefs.

Back in the 19th century, Bom Retiro was different. Wealthy families had country estates here. One estate was called “Bom Retiro”. This gave the neighborhood its name. Colégio de Santa Inês has witnessed many changes. It mirrors the transformation of both the neighborhood and the city.

Domenico Delpiano designed the Colégio de Santa Inês. He was an architect of the Salesian order. His design reflects the Art Nouveau style. This style was popular among the coffee elite. The building takes up an entire block. It stands as a testament to the architectural preferences of the time.

Initially, the Colégio de Santa Inês focused on evangelical education for girls. The school aimed to create an equal and just society. It sought to empower children and young people. It provided them with opportunities for individual and collective growth. The Colégio de Santa Inês played a vital role in this mission.

The Catholic Church was undergoing a revival in the 19th century. It had suffered during the French Revolution due to its association with aristocrats. It directed its efforts toward the working class and colonized countries. This led to the founding of the Pia Sociedade de São Francisco de Sales by Dom Bosco. Maria Domenica Mazarello led the Instituto das Filhas de Maria Auxiliadora. Both were dedicated to educating and training underprivileged youth.

In 1905, a strategic plot in Bom Retiro was chosen. It would house the first Salesian education center for girls in São Paulo. The Filhas de Maria Auxiliadora bought part of the Chácara Dulley. Interestingly, the Dully family founded the first sports club in the city here. It is now known as Clube Atlético Paulistano.

The institution was originally named Colégio de Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora. Later, it became Colégio de Santa Inês. This change honored the day the Madres arrived in Bom Retiro. That day was January 21, Santa Inês’s day.

The school initially offered kindergarten and primary education. They also held festive oratories on Sundays. This Salesian practice introduced children to religious education. They did this through games and informal teaching. In 1918, the school expanded to include middle and high school. That year, the school also began admitting boys.

The Colégio de Santa Inês covers a large area. It spans 11,508.88 square meters. The Rua Três Rios facade stretches 84 meters. The building’s design caters to Salesian educational principles. The architecture includes essential spaces. There is a vestibule, classrooms and a chapel. Also featured are a refectory, kitchen and theater. The upper floor houses a locutory, more classrooms and dormitories. An amphitheater completes the layout.

The building is shaped like a “U”. This creates an inner courtyard. The courtyard is vital for festive oratories. It serves as a social hub. Corridors around the courtyard lead to other areas. Stairways connect the floors. The Art Nouveau style is evident throughout the school.

In 2011, the Conselho Municipal de Preservação do Patrimônio Histórico designated the Colégio de Santa Inês as a historical site. The main building, chapel, and auditorium doors and windows were fully protected. The central courtyard and front garden must remain uncovered. The statue of Nossa Senhora Auxiliadora is also protected.

Today, Colégio de Santa Inês continues to educate. It serves students from maternal to high school. It preserves its historical and cultural significance in São Paulo. It is a place where tradition meets the future. The Colégio de Santa Inês is a beacon of education. It stands as a testament to the enduring power of faith and learning.
