What secrets does Tai Po Pass hold? Tai Po Pass. A gateway through the hills, a silent observer of centuries of change. Tai Po Pass isn’t just a geographical feature. It’s a place woven into the very fabric of Hong Kong’s history, connecting the bustling city to the rural landscapes beyond. Indigenous inhabitants lived near Tai Po, farming pearls and clamming in Tai Po Hoi (Tolo Harbour) as early as 963 AD. The pearl industry thrived during the Song Dynasty. Tai Po later became a fishing port in the late Ming and Qing dynasties. The name Tai Po itself has sparked debate. Some scholars believe it refers to a port or seaside location, citing historical records mentioning “Tai Po Hoi” (Tai Po Sea) and its pearl production. Another theory links the name to an urban legend about a wild animal in the area, requiring people to take “big steps”. Tai Po has a rich history. The Tang clan migrated to the area during the Song dynasty, establishing villages and a market town known as Tai Po Hui. Later, a second market, Tai Wo Shi, arose. Eventually, Tai Wo Shi became the main market, taking the name Tai Po Hui (Tai Po Market). The original market became known as Tai Po Kau Hui (Tai Po Old Market). The British colonial era saw the construction of a District Office, a police station, and two railway stations near Tai Po Market. In the 1970s, Tai Po became a new town, dramatically increasing its population. Tai Po Industrial Estate, Hong Kong’s first industrial estate, was built on reclaimed land in 1974. The Tolo Highway further connected Tai Po to the surrounding areas. Today, Tai Po encompasses the new town, the historical market area, and parts of Tai Po District, a testament to its layered past.
