Did you know that the statue before you embodies a poet who loved the world? This is the Jiří Wolker Statue. It stands as a testament to a young life dedicated to justice and art.

Jií Wolker was a prominent Czech poet. He was also a journalist and playwright. He left an indelible mark on Czech literature. Though his life was tragically short, his words continue to resonate.

Wolker was born in Prostějov in 1900. He demonstrated literary, artistic, and musical talent early in his life. He spent holidays with his grandparents near Olomouc. His grandparents erected a cross on a hill to celebrate his birth.

From 1919, Wolker studied law in Prague. He participated actively in Prague’s literary scene. He became a member of the Devětsil artistic association. His work often explored themes of social revolution and the lives of ordinary people.

Wolker’s poetry reflected a desire for a new world. He sought a means of expressing belief in social revolution. His style embraced naivety and harmony among people. Commonplace things became poetic.

In 1923, Wolker was diagnosed with tuberculosis. Treatment by the sea and in the High Tatras proved ineffective. He succumbed to the disease at the young age of 24.

His epitaph reads that he loved the world. It also states that he battled for justice. He died too young to fully realize his ambitions.

The Jií Wolker Statue is located in Prague. It is in Park Přátelství, Prosek. The statue was created by Miloslav Šonka in 1984. It is made of bronze.

A similar statue exists in Prostějov. There, the bronze statue depicts Wolker sitting on a bench. It was designed by Miloš Karásek. The statue was unveiled in 2018. Visitors can sit next to the poet and contemplate poetry.

Wolker’s legacy lives on through his work and these statues. They remind us of his passion for justice. They also highlight his contributions to Czech literature. He remains a symbol of youthful idealism.
