Birchgrove Park started as part of Lieutenant John Birch’s estate. Didier Numa Joubert bought the land. The Bank of New South Wales later took over. The NSW Government then created Birchgrove Recreation Ground. This later became Birchgrove Park.
Imagine this. It’s 1908. The first professional rugby league matches are about to begin. Birchgrove Oval is the place to be. This park is the spiritual birthplace of rugby league in Australia. The Balmain Tigers called this ground home. They played here from 1908 to 1942. Feel the excitement of the crowds cheering.
Australian rules football also has a history here. Matches were played at Birchgrove Park from 1903 to 1926.
Birchgrove Park hosted a match during the 1908 New Zealand Māori rugby league tour. A Sydney Metropolitan team played against the tourists.
