Imagine a time when city walls offered true protection. Here in Groß-Enzersdorf stands a testament to that age. Groß-Enzersdorf is more than just a town. It’s a story etched in stone and history.

Let’s step back to 1396. Imagine the flurry of activity. Groß-Enzersdorf had just received formal town privileges. The most pressing matter was protection. Construction of the massive city wall began. For three years, workers toiled. Stone by stone, the wall of Groß-Enzersdorf rose. By 1399, it stood complete. It was a formidable barrier against the outside world. This wall still stands today almost completely intact.

But even the sturdiest walls cannot guarantee safety. The history of Groß-Enzersdorf is marked by conflicts. In 1483, Matthias Corvinus’s army ransacked the town. The Ottoman Empire invaded in 1529. Fire ravaged Groß-Enzersdorf in 1554. The Thirty Years’ War brought more occupation and fire. The Plague struck in 1679. The Ottomans returned in 1683. Each event left its mark on Groß-Enzersdorf.

Amidst the chaos, Groß-Enzersdorf persevered. Croats rebuilt destroyed houses. Life slowly returned to normal. Georg Rafael Donner, a baroque sculptor, was baptized here in 1693. His birth in a neighboring village marked a period of relative calm. However, another major fire struck in 1730.

In 1803, Groß-Enzersdorf formally transferred to the House of Habsburg. The town became involved in war again in 1809. The Battle of Aspern-Essling and the Battle of Wagram caused major damage. In 1850, Groß-Enzersdorf became the district capital. Later in 1893 the capital moved to Floridsdorf. From 1886 to 1970, a steam tramway connected Groß-Enzersdorf to Vienna.

The Anschluss in 1938 brought significant changes. Groß-Enzersdorf was absorbed into Greater Vienna. It became the name of the new 22nd district. During World War II, bombings damaged the town. In 1945, Soviet forces conquered Groß-Enzersdorf. In 1954, Groß-Enzersdorf was re-established as a municipality.

Today, Groß-Enzersdorf is a suburban center. Many residents commute to Vienna. Yet, it retains its unique character. The defensive wall stands as a reminder of its past. The Danube-Oder Canal flows through Groß-Enzersdorf.

As you stand before this wall of Groß-Enzersdorf, remember its story. Remember the sieges. Recall the fires. Think of the people who rebuilt their lives here. This is Groß-Enzersdorf. A town forged in conflict. A testament to resilience.
