St Andrew’s College stands proudly within the University of Sydney, a testament to 150 years of academic pursuit and vibrant student life. Established in 1867, St Andrew’s opened its doors to 16 students in 1874. The college’s motto, “Christo, Ecclesiae, Litteris,” translates to “For Christ, the Church, and Scholarship,” reflecting its Protestant origins. Over the years, St Andrew’s has grown significantly. Additions like the Sulman Wing in 1892, the Vaucluse extensions in 1907 and 1914, and the Reid, Thyne, and Hanks buildings in later years, expanded its capacity to over 380 students. Interestingly, St Andrew’s even housed the Presbyterian Theological Hall before it moved to Burwood in 1983. In 2001, St Andrew’s marked a new chapter by admitting female undergraduates, further enriching its diverse community. St Andrew’s College isn’t just about academics. The Rawson Cup, a coveted sporting trophy, fuels fierce competition among the men’s colleges each year. The women, since 2002, compete for the Macrae Archdale Cup, also known as “The Rosebowl.” St Andrew’s has consistently demonstrated its athletic prowess, boasting multiple wins in both competitions. Beyond sports, the college has excelled in the performing arts, winning the Palladian Cup multiple times. St Andrew’s holds the unique distinction of being the only college to win the University Cup, and in 2020 and 2022, achieved the grand slam, winning all four cups in the academic year. From politicians like H.V. “Doc” Evatt, President of the United Nations, to athletes like Rohan Browning, Androvians, as the alumni are known, have made their mark on the world.
