Warsaw’s history stretches back over 1400 years. It began as a cluster of villages and grew into a major European capital. This evolution saw Warsaw become a center of enlightenment. It became known for its tolerance under the patronage of its kings. The city’s origins lie in fortified settlements founded in the 9th century. These form the core of today’s Old Town.

Warsaw’s history has been tumultuous. It has faced plagues, invasions, and devastating fires. Key destructive events include the Deluge and the Great Northern War. The Warsaw Uprising in 1794 and the Battle of Praga also left their scars. The November and January Uprisings added to the city’s trials. World War I, the Siege of Warsaw in 1939, and aerial bombardments deeply affected Warsaw. The Warsaw Ghetto Uprising and the Warsaw Uprising further devastated the city. German occupiers razed the city after the latter.

Warsaw has been the site of critical events in Polish history. It hosted the election of Polish kings. It was the meeting place for the Polish parliament, the Sejm. Events like the Polish victory over the Bolsheviks at the Vistula during the Battle of Warsaw in 1920 took place here. In recent years, Warsaw has become a multicultural capital. It stands as a major commercial and cultural center in Central Europe.

The first fortified settlements appeared in Bródno in the 9th or 10th century. Kamion followed around 1065. Jazdów was established before 1250. Bródno, a small settlement, was burned around 1040. This happened during an uprising. Kamion was near today’s Warszawa Wschodnia station. Jazdów was near the present-day Sejm. Jazdów was raided twice, in 1262 and 1281. A new settlement then emerged. It was a small fishing village called Warszowa. It was located north of Jazdów. Prince Bolesław II established it. Konrad II, Bolesław’s brother, built a wooden castellan. Lithuanians burned it down. The prince then ordered a brick church to be built. It was named St. John and later became a cathedral.

The first historical record of a Warsaw castellan is from 1313. More details about the city’s age appear in a court case against the Teutonic Knights in 1339. Warsaw became a seat of the Dukes of Masovia in the early 14th century. It became the capital of Masovia in 1413 under Prince Janusz II. Warsaw’s 14th-century economy relied on crafts and trade. The townsmen shared a uniform nationality. Their financial status varied greatly. Rich patricians stood at the top. Plebeians formed the lower ranks.

Around this Dacza Granzowa, you can almost feel the echoes of those historic events. The resilience and spirit of Warsaw are palpable.
