“West Hyattsville Baptist Church is here for you.” That’s the warm invitation you might receive online. Today we will delve into the history of this welcoming community. West Hyattsville Baptist Church began on May 14 1950. It started as a Sunday School. The Mission Committee of the First Baptist Church of Mt. Rainer initiated it. The first meetings took place at a home on 33rd Avenue in Hyattsville Maryland.
The Sunday School grew quickly. Soon the residence was too small. The group then moved. They continued attending Sunday School at the Mt. Ranier Church temporarily.
On March 11 1951 a new mission began. A building was rented at Ager and Jamestown Roads. The First Baptist Church of Mt Rainer sponsored it. Dr. Paul L. Bard was placed in charge. He was a Missionary of the Southern District Baptist Association. By October 1951 the Sunday school attendance averaged 46 people. The Worship Service had about 27 attendees.

On 3rd Sundays there is a Minister’s Meeting at 8:00 A.M. Adult Sunday School is at 9:00 A.M. The Worship Service with Baptism is at 10:30 A.M. It also includes Children’s Church and Teen Church. On 5th Sundays a Prayer and Praise Service is held on Wednesdays at 6:30 P.M.

On New Hampshire Avenue turn left onto East West Highway. After crossing Riggs Road bear right onto Ager Road. Turn left on Nicholson Street. The church is at the top of the hill on the left.
If you are coming from New York or Baltimore take 195 South to Silver Spring. Then take 495 West. Take the exit for Route 1 South towards College Park. This is also Baltimore Avenue South. Turn right onto East-West Highway. Turn left on Queen’s Chapel Road. Then turn right on Nicholson Street. The church will be on your right.
