Picture the Old Mill Toronto a majestic landmark standing proudly on the banks of the Humber River. Its history whispers tales of milling lumber for early Toronto homes. This wasn’t just any mill. It was the Kings Mill the very first sawmill in this area.

The Old Mill Toronto’s story begins much earlier though. Long before European settlers arrived First Nations people fished and hunted here. Their presence enriched this land for centuries. A native village even existed nearby at Baby Point. By 1720 the French had established a trading post Magasin Royal near the present site. This marked the beginning of European influence in the area.

Subsequent mills rose and fell at this strategic location on the river. Fires destroyed several. The final mill built in 1848 by William Tyrell met a fiery end in 1881. Yet even in ruins its multi-storey structure remained a prominent feature until 2000. Imagine the stories those stones could tell.

In 1914 Robert Home Smith established the Old Mill Tea Garden. This restaurant became a community hub. It was part of a residential development Smith was creating. It’s incredible that this same restaurant remains in continuous operation today. This enduring establishment evolved into the Old Mill Toronto we see now. It’s a premier event venue a bustling restaurant and a luxurious hotel.

Over the years sixteen banquet rooms were added. A wedding chapel was even built alongside the historic mill ruins. The current building a modern hotel blends seamlessly with the style of the original 1914 restaurant. The ruins were eventually demolished. The beautiful grounds now include a stunning wedding garden a perfect setting for special occasions. Today the Old Mill Toronto continues its tradition of afternoon tea. This is a legacy that stretches back over a century. Big band music once filled this space its legacy lives on in the lively atmosphere.
