Far from the bustling Sydney CBD lies Nelson, a suburb steeped in history. Nelson is 42 kilometers northwest of the city center. It’s part of The Hills Shire local government area. Let’s uncover the story behind this seemingly quiet locale.

Nelson, a suburb of Sydney, holds a unique place in the region. It is more than just a residential area. It is a testament to community spirit. As we stand here, imagine the landscape. Picture it as it evolved over time.

In 1946, a significant event occurred that would forever link the name Nelson to a school. Arden, then a school, sought a permanent home. The school moved from a Presbyterian church hall. It relocated to the church hall of St John’s. Student numbers grew. The church hall could no longer accommodate everyone. An active campaign began. It was aimed to find a suitable property.

Enter Carl Oscar Nelson. He was born in 1881. Carl’s father owned a grocery store. Carl married Lydia Hobden in 1911. Lydia was thirteen years older than him. They were active members of Holy Trinity in Dulwich Hill. Later, they moved to Dundas. There, they supported St Paul’s Carlingford. They supported other Christian organizations too.

Lydia Nelson passed away in 1951. Carl wanted to honor his wife’s memory. He donated £3,000 to the school. There were two conditions attached to this donation. The money had to be used to purchase a property at 69 Railway Parade in Beecroft. The school had to pay off the £3,000 remaining on the property. The school agreed to these conditions. Thus, Arden secured a permanent home.

After repairs and refurbishments, the school moved in. The official opening took place on March 1, 1952. The Archbishop of Sydney unveiled a plaque. It read, “A living memorial to Lydia Nelson whose life was devoted to the service of the Master.”

Later in 1952, Carl donated the remaining £3,000. This act paid off the debt on Nelson House. His generosity secured the school’s financial future. Sadly, Carl Nelson passed away in 1953. But his legacy lives on.

The building that is home to the Kindergarten and Pre-School classrooms is known as Nelson House. This building at 39 Wongala Crescent holds significance as the first property owned by the school.

Nelson’s story reminds us of community contributions. Carl Nelson’s generosity shaped the region. His donation ensured the future of Arden School. Nelson House stands as a symbol. It represents dedication and community support.
