Welcome to the enchanting Tokusei-ji Temple. This temple has a story that stretches back centuries. It involves wandering artists and a change of names.

Tokusei-ji Temple’s story starts in 1626. A priest named Dokuyu founded it. He invited a monk called Myoho Meiso to be the first head priest. Initially, the temple was called Jorakuji Temple.

The temple became famous because of Matsuo Basho. Matsuo Basho stayed here for some years. Because of this connection, the temple was renamed Bashozan Tokusei-ji Temple in 1745. This new name used the artist’s pen name. It honored Basho’s time at the temple. People called it “the temple where Basho left his hat.”

During the Edo period, Tokusei-ji Temple was known for its Basho Hall. Matsuo Basho lived here for a while.

The temple changed its name again in 1752. It became Todai-ji Temple. But in 1892, it went back to Bashozan Tokusei-ji Temple. This is its name today.

Another interesting fact is that the temple holds the tomb of Nagatani Masamitsu. He was a merchant who helped reform the Kabuki theater.
