A monument to resilience. Tel Haim stands as a testament to early Jewish settlers’ determination. Let’s step back in time and explore the story of Tel Haim.

Tel Haim, meaning “Hill of Life”, started as an agricultural outpost in 1905. It was initially named Talha. Haim Kalvarisky purchased the land. In 1918, it officially became Tel Haim, a border outpost.

After World War I, the British relinquished control of the northern section of Upper Galilee to French jurisdiction. This displeased the Zionist movement. They wanted the sources of the Jordan River within British Mandatory Palestine. Tel Haim became strategically important.

In 1920, Arabs sought to search Tel Haim. Joseph Trumpeldor and ten men confronted them. A verbal dispute escalated into an armed clash. Six Jews from Tel Haim died. The settlement was burned. Eight Jews and five Muslims lost their lives.

The deaths at Tel Haim became a rallying cry. Tel Haim’s influence resonated deeply within Israeli culture. Trumpeldor became a symbol of sacrifice. His last words “It is good to die for our country” became famous.

Ultimately, the area of Upper Galilee was included in Mandatory Palestine. Tel Haim was resettled in 1921. It later integrated into kibbutz Kfar Giladi in 1926.

Today, Tel Haim is a national monument. It commemorates the eight Jews who died defending it. A statue of a defiant lion stands in memorial. Kiryat Shmona, meaning “Town of the Eight”, is named in their honor. Tel Haim represents sacrifice and resolve. It embodies the spirit of early Zionism. The story of Tel Haim continues to inspire.
