What stories could these walls tell after 150 years? This is Lincolnia United Methodist Church. It stands as a testament to faith and community.
Lincolnia United Methodist Church’s story began with the name Lebanon. In 1864 the original Methodist Congregation in Lebanon was chartered. This marked the humble beginnings of a church.
In 1875 the community changed its name. It became Lincolnia to honor President Lincoln. An earlier church called Lebanon Church met a tragic fate. Federal troops burned it during their retreat after the second battle of Bull Run.
Undeterred the community rebuilt. Lincolnia Methodist Church rose on Lincolnia Road in 1876. Levi Deming donated the land. In those early days a circuit-riding minister served the church. He divided his time among several congregations.
As the congregation grew they needed more space. In 1965 church members built a new building. It stands on Little River Turnpike and Lincoln Avenue. This is where we stand today. The new building housed precious relics from the old church. These included a log a glass communion set and a Bible dated 1875.
The church experienced another significant change in 1968. The Methodist Church merged with the Evangelical United Brethren Church. This led to the name change. It became Lincolnia United Methodist Church.
Lincolnia United Methodist Church continues to thrive. It is a multi-ethnic multi-generational congregation. With just under 300 members it offers many opportunities. Members find ways to minister grow and feel valued.
Today Lincolnia United Methodist Church opens its doors to all. Services take place on Sundays at 11 a.m.. Wednesday evenings offer a Zoom service at 7:30 p.m..
