Established in 1963, Nishitokyo Shiritsu Hekizan Elementary School has a rich history. The school’s name, Hekizan, is inspired by a poem by the renowned Tang Dynasty poet, Li Bai. The name was suggested by the then mayor of Hogoshi, Mr. Harada Genkichi. Nishitokyo Shiritsu Hekizan Elementary School holds a unique distinction. It was the first school in the area to embrace a full-scale greening initiative, transforming its campus into a vibrant natural space. While ongoing development efforts mean fewer students can currently access the greenery, the school remains dedicated to restoring its full potential. A notable feature of Nishitokyo Shiritsu Hekizan Elementary School is its modern school building with a retractable, multi-purpose hall. Students at Nishitokyo Shiritsu Hekizan Elementary School are known for their grounded nature and thoughtful approach. A particularly moving example of this was the student-led initiative to send relief funds to victims of the Kumamoto earthquakes. For instance, students have collaborated with local farmers to learn about the cultivation of Hogoshi pears, a local specialty. In September 2016, the band achieved the remarkable feat of winning a silver medal at the East Japan School Brass Band Competition.
