“A house of gratitude,” they called it. The Kościół pw. Chrystusa Króla stands before you. It is a testament to faith and resilience. This church is more than bricks and mortar. It embodies the spirit of Warsaw.
Construction on the Kościół pw. Chrystusa Króla began in 1933. It was thanks to the efforts of Father Jan Golędzinowski. But the road wasn’t easy. World War II interrupted progress. Plans had to be redrawn after the war. Architect Stanisław Koziejewski revised the initial designs. Father Franciszek Duczyński completed the work in 1954.
The Kościół pw. Chrystusa Króla was conceived as thanks for the 1920 victory against the Bolsheviks. Archbishop Aleksander Kakowski dedicated the site in 1935. This dedication took place on the Feast of Christ the King. The church stands on land partly donated by Florentyna and Roch Krzeszewski.
In 2007 the Kościół pw. Chrystusa Króla gained two new chapels. One is a baptistery. The other honors the Miracle on the Vistula. This chapel features a mosaic of Our Lady of Victory. She crushes the serpent’s head. It also holds the ashes of soldiers who died in 1920.
Tragedy struck in August 2011. A fire nearly destroyed the church’s roof. The tower collapsed. Fire and water caused extensive damage inside. The Kościół pw. Chrystusa Króla was rebuilt thanks to parishioners’ efforts.
The parish of Kościół pw. Chrystusa Króla was established in 1932. Cardinal Aleksander Kakowski created it. It was formed from parts of two other parishes. These were the parishes of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and Our Lady of Loreto.
The church’s location on Tykocińska Street was carefully chosen. Three locations were possible. This site was selected partly because of the Krzeszewski family’s donation. A wooden chapel served as the first place of worship. A brick chapel and two small halls were added in 1932.
Today the Kościół pw. Chrystusa Króla continues to serve its community. Masses are held daily. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament takes place regularly. The current pastor is Father Marcin Ożóg. He assumed the role in October 2023. The Kościół pw. Chrystusa Króla stands as a beacon of faith. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of its community. Remember its history.
