“Ukrainians in Brazil? Orthodox churches in São Paulo?” The blend might surprise you. Yet, here we stand before the Paróquia Ortodoxa Ucraniana. It embodies a rich history of faith and cultural preservation.

This church represents more than just a place of worship. It is a testament to the Ukrainian community’s journey in Brazil. The history began over 120 years ago. Ukrainian migrants sought a better life overseas. Mass emigration started in the 1890s. Most of these emigrants came from western Ukraine. They were mainly Catholics. These early settlers made their homes in states like Paraná and Santa Catarina.

The first priests arrived in 1896. The Order of St. Basil the Great played a vital role. They supported the Ukrainian Church in Brazil. Sisters of the Servant of the Immaculate Virgin Mary soon followed.

Initially, the Ukrainian faithful fell under the jurisdiction of Latin bishops. These bishops were from Curitiba, Ponta Grossa, and Jacarezinho. Over time, the growing number of Eastern rite faithful in Brazil called for a change.

In 1951, the Holy Congregation for the Oriental Churches decided to entrust all Eastern faithful to one Ordinary. Cardinal Jaime de Barros Camara, Archbishop of Rio de Janeiro, was chosen. He proved to be a true friend to the Ukrainian community. He championed their rights and traditions within the Catholic Church.

A pivotal moment arrived in 1958. The Catholic Church of the Ukrainian Rite in Brazil received its first bishop. Bishop Joseph Roman Martynets was appointed. He chose Curitiba as his episcopal seat.

Later, in 1962, Pope John XXIII established the Apostolic Exarchate for the Ukrainian rite. Bishop Joseph became the first exarch. In 1971, Pope Paul VI created the eparchy of St. John the Baptist for Ukrainian Catholics in Brazil. It was based in Curitiba. Bishop Joseph was appointed the first eparch.

Today, the Archeparchy of Curitiba extends its jurisdiction to a vast area. It includes states like São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and others. It covers over 3.5 million square kilometers. It serves a population of about 177 million people.

The Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in Brazil has grown. It now has 23 parishes and 236 churches. About 500,000 Ukrainians live in Brazil. Most are descendants of immigrants. They settled mainly in the state of Paraná.

The Paróquia Ortodoxa Ucraniana stands as a beacon. It symbolizes the endurance of Ukrainian culture and faith in Brazil. Its story is intertwined with the larger narrative. It speaks of migration, adaptation, and the unwavering spirit of a community. This is a community that holds onto its heritage far from its ancestral homeland. Take a moment to appreciate this blend of cultures. Observe how faith and tradition have found a home here in São Paulo.
