Imagine monks carefully writing in illuminated manuscripts. This is a glimpse into Mnichovice’s distant past. We are standing in a town with roots stretching back to 1134.
Mnichovice began as a village connected to the Sázava Monastery. Monks founded it. They even built a Romanesque basilica here around 1140. Picture this basilica. It was a symbol of faith in a new settlement.
In 1420 Mnichovice transformed into a market town. However the Hussites conquered the monastery in 1421. The market town then became their property. Later in 1422 the Kostka of Postupice family acquired it. These changes reflect turbulent times in Czech history.
Fires repeatedly ravaged Mnichovice. Disasters struck in 1531 and 1631. The Thirty Years’ War in 1638 also brought devastation. Further fires damaged the town in 1746 1751 and 1865–1872. The people of Mnichovice showed resilience. They rebuilt their town each time.
Mnichovice held the title of a town from 1852 to 1945. Then it was restored in 2000. This reflects its historical importance and recent growth. Today Mnichovice has about 4100 inhabitants. It is part of the Prague-East District in the Central Bohemian Region.
The Mnichovka Stream flows through the town. It adds to the area’s natural beauty. The surrounding landscape is part of the Benešov Uplands. The highest point is 478 meters above sea level.
The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary stands as a main landmark. Originally a Romanesque church it was rebuilt in Gothic style around 1330. Later in 1746–1754 it gained a Baroque style. The church combines different architectural styles. This shows Mnichovice’s long history and changes in taste.
Administratively Mnichovice includes three parts. These are Mnichovice Božekov and Myšlín. Each has its own story to tell. According to the 2021 census they had populations of 3175 673 and 308 respectively.
The D1 motorway runs near Mnichovice. It connects Prague to Brno. This makes Mnichovice easily accessible. It also links it to major transportation routes.
In 1932 Mnichovice had a diverse economy. There were two doctors a veterinarian and many shops. These included a drugstore a watchmaker and several restaurants. Industry included brick factories a cement goods factory and piano production. This shows a vibrant community.
The Jiráskova Library in Mnichovice has its roots in 1837. Dean Vojtěch Vilibald Kramerius founded a library at the rectory. In 1922 the library requested to bear the name of writer Alois Jirásek. He agreed in 1923.
Today Mnichovice is a blend of old and new. It has faced fires wars and political changes. However it remains a living community. Its history is visible in its buildings its landmarks and its people.
