Have you ever wondered about a place where the first alms are offered each day? This is Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda. It stands proudly atop Nga-pha Hill in Sagaing. The hill is also known as Five Frog Hill because its shape resembles a reptile.

Local legend tells of a hermit named Varuna. He flew from the Himalayas to the forests of Sagaing. He joined other spiritual seekers. The Buddha himself came to this spot to teach them. They presented offerings. An orangutan offered flowers and fruit. The Buddha pointed towards Ava. He proclaimed a great city would rise there. He said the orangutan would be reborn as its king. Some believe this was King Mingyiswa. Dragons burrowed under the earth in fright. The southern hills bear the name Nagashore Taung. It means Dragon’s Burrow.
Soon U Ponya Shin Pagoda is more than a beautiful site. It is a place of deep spiritual significance. Pilgrims believe the pagoda grants 14 wishes. These wishes include insights into future events. They also include getting promoted and being free from dying by murder.
