Beneath the ornate facade of the Hosenträgerhaus, a story unfolds. What’s in a name? This building’s moniker, literally “suspenders house,” hints at the visual jest within its design. Look closely at the Universitätsstraße facade. Notice the six pilaster strips adorned with stucco. These vertical lines reminded Viennese citizens of suspenders. Thus, the Hosenträgerhaus was christened.

Completed in 1888, the Hosenträgerhaus stands diagonally opposite the Landesgericht I building. It was designed by the renowned architect Otto Wagner. Wagner’s creation acts almost as a visual barrier. Seen from the south, it appears to close off the broad Landesgerichtsstraße.

Considered a key structure, the Hosenträgerhaus broke from traditional palace designs. Wagner made a bold move toward modern, grand urban living. The building offered spacious apartments, appealing to the upper middle class. A large coffee house once thrived on the ground floor adding to the building’s appeal.

Imagine the Alser Kaserne standing next to the Hosenträgerhaus. That was the reality until 1912. The city of Vienna purchased and demolished the barracks. This created the Frankhplatz and Otto-Wagner-Platz. The Hosenträgerhaus now faces the Frankhplatz.

The Garnisongasse begins at the eastern front of the Hosenträgerhaus. The western side of the building borders the Frankhplatz. Tram lines 43 and 44 pass conveniently in front of the Hosenträgerhaus.

In June 2020, the Hosenträgerhaus faced a threat. Significant settlement cracks appeared in the part of the building along Universitätsstraße. These cracks may be related to the construction of the U5 metro station at Frankhplatz. The Wiener Linien carried out foundation reinforcement work beneath the Hosenträgerhaus. This was to eliminate any danger to the structure.

The Frankhplatz station on metro line U5 is nearby. Dr. Josef Frankh inspired the square’s name. He donated land for a home for the homeless and war veterans. This eventually became the Vienna General Hospital.

The Hosenträgerhaus endures. Its unusual name and distinctive design make it a landmark. It is a testament to Otto Wagner’s innovative approach to urban architecture. The Hosenträgerhaus stands as a proud piece of Vienna’s architectural puzzle.
