Long ago in Koto Ward Tokyo stands Chojyoji Temple. It’s a Jodo Shinshu temple. It’s a place steeped in history. The exact founding year remains unknown. However records show it was established by Hachiman Rokujyo. He was a significant figure.

Rokujyo founded a temple in what is now Shizuoka Prefecture. He had a son who entered the priesthood. The temple was later moved. First to Kawabe Shinmachi. This was during the Bunroku era 1593-1596. It was relocated again after the great fire of 1657. This is the present location.

Interestingly the temple’s grounds show the influence of the Tokugawa clan. Many priests were from families connected to the Tokugawa shogunate. This is shown in the temple’s architecture. Even in the family registry.

Chojyoji Temple’s location is very accessible. You can walk there in under 15 minutes from the nearest train station. This makes it a convenient stop on our tour. The temple may not be large but it has a unique story. Its history is woven into the fabric of Tokyo itself.
