Hidden amidst the bustling streets of Tokyo, Niijuku Hie Jinja beckons. This Shinto shrine, Niijuku Hie Jinja, holds a history as vibrant as the city itself. Niijuku Hie Jinja’s story intertwines with the very fabric of this neighborhood. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of Shinto tradition.

Niijuku Hie Jinja enshrines the deity Oyama-tsu-mi-no-kami. While its exact founding date remains a mystery, some believe it dates back to the late Muromachi period. During the Edo period, it was known as “Yamao-sha” and served as a guardian shrine for the post town of Niijuku. This strategic location placed Niijuku Hie Jinja at the crossroads of the bustling waterways and roads that shaped Edo’s growth. Imagine the travelers and merchants passing by, seeking blessings for safe journeys. The shrine’s red torii gate would have been a welcome sight, offering a moment of respite.

The shrine’s history also reflects the changes in the landscape. Initially located further west, Niijuku Hie Jinja was moved to its present location in 1729. This relocation was necessitated by the construction of the Nakagawa canal. Later, during the Meiji period, it was renamed Niijuku Hie Jinja. The vibrant red of the shrine’s main building, known as the “Yamao Shaden,” is a striking example of traditional Shinto architecture. This shrine is a living connection to the past.

Today, Niijuku Hie Jinja continues to serve the community. It hosts an annual festival on September 15th, drawing locals and visitors alike. Here, amidst the vibrant energy of the festival, the spirit of Oyama-tsu-mi-no-kami is honored. Niijuku Hie Jinja stands as a quiet oasis. It reminds us of the rich history that lies beneath the modern surface of Tokyo.
