John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg was born in Trappe Pennsylvania. His father Henry Melchior Muhlenberg was a patriarch of the Lutheran Church in America. Peter followed in his father’s footsteps initially. He served as a pastor in New Jersey and later in Woodstock Virginia.
But destiny had other plans for Muhlenberg. As tensions rose with Great Britain, Muhlenberg became a passionate advocate for colonial rights. In January 1776, Muhlenberg delivered a stirring sermon to his congregation. He declared that there was a time to preach and a time to fight. Then Muhlenberg revealed a military uniform beneath his clerical robe. Legend says he recruited 300 men that day.
Muhlenberg became Colonel of the 8th Virginia Regiment. His regiment later became known as the German Regiment. He fought with distinction throughout the Revolutionary War. He participated in battles like Brandywine Germantown and Yorktown. By the end of the war Muhlenberg had risen to the rank of Major General.
But Peter Muhlenberg’s service didn’t end on the battlefield. He entered politics after the war. Muhlenberg served in the Pennsylvania legislature and the U.S. Congress. He even served as a Senator.
