Colonial Knob Scenic Reserve

Gazing up at the slopes of Rangituhi / Colonial Knob, can you sense the whispers of ancient stories carried on the wind? Rangituhi / Colonial Knob, meaning “sky glow” in Māori, is more than just a scenic reserve. It’s a living testament to the passage of time, a place where nature’s grandeur intertwines with human history. This reserve, administered by the Department of Conservation, along with Te Rāhui o Rangituhi and Spicer Botanical Park (managed by the Porirua City Council), safeguards a precious remnant of native forest within the Tawa-Porirua Basin. The knob itself, rising to 468 meters, was once part of a vast, ancient peneplain, a land mass worn down by erosion over millions of years. Earthquakes then dramatically reshaped the landscape, thrusting the peneplain upwards and creating the hills we see today. From the summit of Rangituhi / Colonial Knob, the panoramic views are simply breathtaking. On a clear day, your gaze can stretch from the Inland Kaikoura Range in the south all the way to the majestic Mount Taranaki in the north-west. Closer to hand, the islands of Mana and Kapiti rise from the sea, and the unique drowned river valleys of Porirua Harbour etch their patterns across the landscape. But Rangituhi / Colonial Knob holds more than just natural wonders. Hidden within the reserve lie two abandoned reservoirs, relics of a bygone era. These reservoirs, built in the late 19th century, once supplied water to the Porirua Hospital. They stand as silent witnesses to the changing needs of the community, eventually becoming redundant when the hospital connected to the main Porirua City water supply. And the future of Rangituhi / Colonial Knob promises even more excitement. Plans are underway for the “Porirua Adventure Park,” a thrilling development that could feature mountain biking trails, zip lines, a surf simulator, and even a gondola. While the project has faced some delays, the vision remains, hinting at a future where adventure and nature intertwine on the slopes of this remarkable landmark.
