“Remain here” whispers the ancient name Allawah. It’s a call echoing from the Tharawal people who once made this land their home. Allawah a suburb nestled in southern Sydney. This unassuming place holds a history richer than its quiet streets suggest.

Allawah’s story begins long before its railway station opened in 1925. Captain John Townson received a vast land grant in 1808. This covered 1950 acres stretching from King Georges Road to beyond Kogarah station. Later he received an additional 250 acres complaining about the quality of the initial land. This land became part of modern Allawah.

The railway arrived. It transformed Allawah. The station’s opening spurred a housing boom. Many British migrants settled here building modest homes. The area even earned the nickname “Struggletown”. This reflected the small simple houses built by these early residents.

Allawah grew. Its shopping centre emerged beside the station. It boasts a newsagent post office and local pub the Allawah Hotel. Purchased by Justin Hemmes’ Merivale Group in 2019 the hotel has become a local landmark.

But Allawah’s story isn’t just about growth and development. It’s also marked by sadness. The Southern Sydney Synagogue has faced repeated antisemitic attacks since the 1990s. Firebombings vandalism and arson targeted this sacred place. These acts of hate stand as a stark reminder of the ongoing challenges facing religious tolerance.

Today Allawah is a vibrant multicultural community. Its residents hail from across the globe. Their diverse backgrounds enrich the suburb’s character. Yet the echoes of the past remain. They whisper the story of Allawah. A story of land grants railway expansion and the enduring fight against prejudice. A story still being written.
