In 1948, a dream began to take root in the hearts of World War II veterans and their families settling in a burgeoning Vancouver neighborhood. This dream, nurtured by Reverend Robert N. Matheson, was the Willingdon Heights United Church. Initially, services were held in humble settings: a local store serving as the sanctuary and a member’s basement transformed into a Sunday school. The congregation grew quickly. The Sunday school soon outgrew its basement home and relocated to Kitchener School. The need for a dedicated space became undeniable. With the support of the Canadian Memorial United Church, a building program was launched. In June 1952, the first service echoed within the newly constructed walls of the Willingdon Heights Community Church. The congregation’s commitment to serving the community extended beyond its own walls. Before other churches were established in the area, Willingdon Heights hosted ecumenical services. People of various faiths, including Anglicans, Presbyterians, and Roman Catholics, gathered together in unity. The growing congregation also required more space for its flourishing Sunday school. In 1957, a Christian Education Building was added, providing space for over 600 children. The Willingdon Heights United Church continued to thrive, a testament to its deep roots in the community. In 2000, the City of Burnaby recognized the church’s historical significance, designating the sanctuary as a Heritage Site. Today, the Willingdon Heights United Church stands as a symbol of resilience, community, and faith. It continues to serve as a beacon of hope and a testament to the vision of those who first dreamt of its creation. The church’s legacy is etched not only in its architecture but also in the countless lives it has touched over the decades.
