What do you know about Tehov? That is a good question. The first written mention of this village is from 1309. It has been quite a journey for Tehov since then. Tehov, a municipality and village about 11 miles southeast of Prague, in the Benešov Uplands. It was once part of a grand castle, built in the 12th century, but it was described as abandoned by the year 1547. The village dismantled the castle for building materials. Originally called ‘Velký Tehov’, its name changed in 1919 to just ‘Tehov’, which means ‘Těh’s (court)’ in Czech. The village holds a special place in history. Its main landmark, the Church of Saint John the Baptist, stands tall as a reminder of the village’s heritage. This stately Baroque church is said to have its foundations from the second half of the 14th century. The tower was completed in 1779. The region around Tehov may have been much wetter in the past. Local legend tells of a bottomless pond, called the ‘Bezedný rybníček’, near the hamlet of Lada in the southern part of Tehov. In 1888, a Prussian soldier mysteriously vanished into the pond, adding to the mystique and fueling tales of its bottomless depths. Tehov has seen a lot of change. The village now holds a modern school with a capacity of about 100 children. The Tehov Elementary School and Kindergarten, built in 1905, has undergone significant renovations, including a major rebuild in 2012. Tehov is a living testament to the enduring spirit of a place, evolving but holding onto its past. Each village has a story to tell. Tehov’s tale is one of a quiet but proud history, one that embraces its traditions and the passage of time.
