Is there a more fascinating concept than a “kitchenless house”? That’s exactly what the Heimhof, right here in Vienna’s 15th district, once was. The Heimhof, completed in 1926, was a revolutionary social housing project. It was designed to liberate women from the perceived shackles of domesticity. Imagine a world where cooking and cleaning were communal tasks, handled by paid staff. This innovative approach aimed to empower women, particularly working-class women, by freeing up their time and energy.

The Heimhof boasted a central kitchen, laundry facilities, and a communal dining hall, a stark contrast to the traditional Viennese apartment. The idea was controversial. Some praised its forward-thinking approach, while others viewed it as a threat to family values.

Life in the Heimhof wasn’t just about chores, though. The communal spaces also hosted lectures, political discussions, and even entertainment events. The Heimhof, you see, was as much about fostering a sense of community as it was about social reform. However, the dream of a “kitchenless house” was short-lived. With the rise of Austrofascism and later, the Nazi regime, the Heimhof’s central kitchen was shut down. Individual apartments were outfitted with kitchens, and the communal lifestyle was abandoned.

Today, the Heimhof still stands as a testament to a bold social experiment, a reminder of a time when Vienna dared to reimagine the very fabric of domestic life.
