Marvelous marble. That’s what greets you at the Desfourský palác. This isn’t just any building. It’s a Neoclassical masterpiece. Architect Josef Kranner completed it in 1847.

The Desfourský palác boasts a surprisingly austere facade from the street. The interior however is breathtaking. Imagine walls clad in luxurious marble. Admire the ceiling paintings. Gaze at the gilded chandeliers. Touch the intricate stucco. Feel the cool smoothness of the mosaic floors.

The grand central staircase is a showstopper. It features columns of stunning green marble. The ceilings are adorned with illusory designs. These details showcase the extraordinary craftsmanship of Czech artisans.

Sadly neglect and insensitive renovations damaged some precious elements. There was even talk of demolishing the Desfourský palác completely. Luckily that never happened.

In 2020 the Desfourský palác became part of the Museum of the City of Prague. A complete reconstruction followed. Now the museum uses this magnificent space.

Occasionally you can glimpse the Desfourský palác’s splendor. It opens its doors during the Open House festival. It also participates in the 4+4 Days in Motion event. These events offer rare opportunities to step inside this stunning building.

František Vincent Des Fours Walderode commissioned this magnificent structure. He was a nobleman from Hrubý Rohozec. The building served his needs and provided rental apartments. The Desfourský palác was not merely a residence. It was a testament to wealth and taste.

The Desfourský palác once had a large garden. It featured a greenhouse and beautiful neo-Renaissance garden houses. Sadly in the 1950s this garden gave way to the Rudé právo publishing house.

Under communism the palace faced potential demolition. Plans for redevelopment threatened its existence. Fortunately the Desfourský palác survived. It stands as a reminder of a bygone era. It symbolizes the resilience of Prague’s architectural heritage. Take a moment to appreciate its beauty. It represents a significant piece of Prague’s history.
