Did you know that Suburban Airport once hummed with activity? Right here where we stand a vibrant history unfolded. Suburban Airport in Laurel Maryland opened in March 1960. It was a family-run airport a bustling hub for general aviation. The Snowden family’s history is deeply intertwined with the land. Their manor Birmingham built in 1690 stood near the runway. The family cemetery lies just east of it a silent testament to generations past. The airport was more than just runways and hangars. It was a place of innovation. Homebuilt experimental aircraft were common. Many aircraft were even built on site.

Suburban Airport hosted meetings of the Experimental Aircraft Association. Young Eagles flights introduced aviation to enthusiastic youth. Piper Aircraft even had a dealership there. The airport played a key role in the community. Then came September 11 2001. The attacks brought operations to a halt. Airspace restrictions limited access. Eventually arrivals and departures resumed under strict Washington Air Defense Identification Zone rules. This significantly impacted the airport’s viability.

Later development attempts further complicated matters. Polm Housing tried to rezone the land for a large housing development. This sparked a community debate. Plans to expand the airport with hangars flight schools and helicopter charters were announced but never materialized. In 2010 new minimum approach angles changed things. New displaced thresholds shortened the runway. This forced organizations like Young Eagles to relocate. The reduced runway length made it unsafe for many smaller aircraft.

By 2012 various factors contributed to the airport’s decline. BRAC-related inflow had ceased. The housing market slump reduced the need for workforce housing. Overdevelopment strained county resources. The airport’s owner attempted various strategies for survival even suggesting a school for troubled children. The county however declined these efforts. Finally Suburban Airport closed on June 30 2017. Today the hangars and runways largely remain. A silent reminder of this once thriving airport. It stands as a testament to the changing landscape of aviation and development. A poignant reminder of the airport’s unique place in history. A story of innovation community and ultimately closure.
