Envision a place where modern life dances with echoes of the past. That place is Haninge kommun. Haninge kommun is a municipality in Stockholm County. It is both an archipelago community and a suburb of Stockholm. The central town of Haninge kommun is Handen.

Haninge kommun sits on the Södertörn peninsula. It lies in the northeastern part of the Södermanland province. To the east, Haninge kommun borders the Baltic Sea. This border includes Stockholm’s southern archipelago. To the southwest, Haninge kommun borders Nynäshamn. To the west, it meets Botkyrka. Huddinge lies to the northwest and Tyresö to the northeast.

Haninge kommun includes the parishes of Dalarö, Muskö, Utö, Ornö, Västerhaninge, and Österhaninge. In 1862, these became individual rural municipalities. In 1952, some municipalities merged. Haninge kommun formed in 1971. It was created by merging Österhaninge and Västerhaninge rural municipalities.

Interestingly, Haninge kommun’s coat of arms was not established until 1985. It features a red wood grouse and an anchor. The anchor symbolizes naval activity in the municipality. The shield is divided into gold and blue. The late adoption was due to an unpopular earlier design. This earlier design, created after the 1971 merger, depicted two chain links forming an “H.” It was often called “the crossed sausage brand.” In the early 1980s, Haninge kommun decided to commission a new coat of arms.

Haninge kommun boasts an extensive archipelago. It includes thousands of islands, islets, and skerries. There are 17 nature reserves, including Tyresta National Park. This park has 55 kilometers of trails through untouched wilderness. South of Jordbro lies the Jordbro burial ground. It is considered the largest burial ground in the Nordic region from the Early Iron Age. Nearby stood an execution site called Galgstenen.

Haninge is rich in ancient remains. Several known shipwrecks lie off the coast of Dalarö. Moreover, Haninge houses Sweden’s longest and deepest road tunnel. The Muskö tunnel is almost three kilometers long. At its deepest, it plunges 66 meters below sea level.

When visiting Haninge, explore its fascinating history. Visit the Iron Age burial ground in Jordbro. Discover the Dalarö ship graveyard area. Wander the ancient path on Gålö. Tour Årsta Castle and stroll along the Årsta Castle path. Haninge’s archipelago and islands are worth a visit. Haninge offers many museums and local heritage centers. These include Svartbäcken school museum. It features a 150-year-old classroom and teacher’s residence. There is also Utö mine museum. It sits next to the mine shaft. Other options include the Sports Cottage Museum. You could also visit the Folk and Garden Museum.

The author August Strindberg spent many summers on Kymmendö island. His novel “The Hemsöborna” portrays the island’s people and environment. Both Kymmendö and Nåttarö are worth a trip. Nåttarö is Haninge’s own South Sea island. It has many beautiful sandy beaches. Haninge also offers many other beaches for activities and relaxation.
