“More than three hectares” that is what they say about Jezioro Zgorzała. But let me tell you a tale of a lake that was once far grander.

Jezioro Zgorzała sits here in Ursynów. It is nestled between the Zgorzała nad Jeziorem and Jeziorki Polskie estates. Trombity, Kórnicka and Dumki streets form a square around it. This lake’s story is one of change. It reflects Warsaw’s own transformations.

Once, Jezioro Zgorzała was Warsaw’s largest lake. It even dwarfed Czerniakowskie. Imagine its vast expanse then. It stretched across nearly 20 hectares. But time and construction took their toll.

Over-drying and falling ground water levels caused it to shrink. People filled parts of it with rubble. This reduced its capacity. This led to drainage problems in Ursynów. The area even suffered a major flood in 2010.

But the people of Ursynów decided to act. In 2012, a project began to restore Jezioro Zgorzała. The goal was to create a retention area of 60000 cubic meters. This ambitious plan cost over 8 million złoty.

The work reshaped the shoreline. Workers reinforced it. They also deepened the lake. Plans included planting hundreds of trees and shrubs. They wanted to create park infrastructure. This included benches, piers, a playground and a parking area.

Jezioro Zgorzała is not only about water. It also is about wildlife. Studies have identified many bird species around the lake. Bitterns arrive in the spring. Mute swans glide gracefully on the surface. Ducks dabble in the shallows. Birdwatchers have spotted rare species. Red-necked grebes and garganeys have been seen here.

In 2007, the city recognized Jezioro Zgorzała’s ecological importance. They designated the area as an ecological site.

As you stroll around Jezioro Zgorzała think about its past. Think about its future. Appreciate the efforts to preserve this green space in Warsaw. This lake is a testament to nature’s resilience. It also mirrors the community’s commitment. They are committed to preserving this precious resource.

Today, Jezioro Zgorzała offers a place for relaxation. It is a place for recreation. Take a moment to enjoy the view. Listen to the birds. Remember the story of this lake. It is a story of loss. It is a story of restoration. It is a story of Warsaw itself.
