A bronze bust gazes serenely from Olle Adolphsons park. This isn’t just any park. Olle Adolphsons park holds a unique history. It’s located on Södermalm in Stockholm. Before its official naming on March 10 2014 it was nameless. The park was named after the renowned troubadour Olle Adolphson. He lived nearby on Bastugatan 32 during the 1950s.

The story of Olle Adolphsons park goes deeper than its namesake. Before it became a park it was a grove of trees. This was between two blocks. This area served a grim purpose. Victims of “swamp fever” were kept here. They awaited burial preparations. “Swamp fever” is now known as malaria. Malaria was prevalent in Sweden until the 19th century. The morbid history explains why this land remained undeveloped.

Today Olle Adolphsons park is a tranquil space. People enjoy its green spaces. The park is nestled between Lilla Skinnarviksgränd and Monteliusvägen on Mariaberget. Signs marking the park were erected on April 23 2014. The park’s tranquility is punctuated by the presence of Olle Adolphson’s bronze bust. It was unveiled in April 2016. The bust is the work of artist Olle Seglert. Funding came from a private collection. Donations were made by the singer’s relatives and friends.

Olle Adolphsons park is more than just a green space. It’s a testament to a beloved artist. It also serves as a poignant reminder of a time when malaria was a significant threat. The park offers a moment of reflection. This is on Stockholm’s vibrant Södermalm. It is a peaceful escape from the urban bustle. Come and enjoy the calm of Olle Adolphsons park.
