They are composed of proterozoic shales with distinct layers of hard quartzite. These layers were exposed by erosion revealing the striking landscape we see today.
For centuries people shaped this area. Pasturing and logging affected the vegetation. In Zlatnice’s early days a thriving steppe-like grassland flourished. Imagine wildflowers dancing in the sun. Unfortunately changes came. Overgrazing ceased and trees encroached. The precious steppe vegetation shrank. Today only a small area in the lower part of Zlatnice retains the original steppe character. The area however is not without its charms. The upper part now features a secondary forest with a mix of species. You can still see remnants of the old warm-loving oak forest with mature service trees. These are a testament to the resilience of nature.
Recent efforts have been made to restore Zlatnice. Experts have thinned out the trees and shrubs. This allows more sunlight to reach the ground. This helps the remaining steppe plants to thrive. The hope is to bring back some of Zlatnice’s original splendor.
