The scent of incense hangs heavy in the air. A symphony of chanting echoes from within Gandantegchinlen Monastery.

Welcome to Gandantegchinlen Monastery. This is not just any monastery. This is the heart of Mongolian Buddhism. It was founded in 1809. For decades it stood as the sole surviving Buddhist monastery in the country. A testament to faith’s enduring strength.

The story of Gandantegchinlen Monastery is one of resilience. Its early days saw the construction of Shar Temple in 1809. Later the fifth Jebtsundamba Khutuktu built a palace. He named it Gandantegchinlen. This means “complete rejoicing”. This name reflects the joyous spirit found within.

Tragedy struck in 1939. The anti-religious persecutions swept through Mongolia. Many monasteries were destroyed. Gandan was closed. Its buildings were used for secular purposes. Even the magnificent statue of Avalokiteshvara was broken. It was thought to be melted down in Moscow.

Yet hope remained. In 1944 the monastery reopened. It was the only active monastery in Mongolia. It was a beacon of faith in a time of oppression. The Soviets controlled it tightly. Still it survived.

The revival of Gandantegchinlen Monastery is a remarkable story. In 1996 a new statue of Avalokiteshvara was unveiled. This magnificent 26.5 meter tall gilded bronze statue stands as a symbol of rebirth. It contains precious stones. It weighs 90 tons.

Today Gandantegchinlen Monastery thrives. Over 100 monks reside here. They continue ancient traditions. They preserve a rich collection of Buddhist treasures. These include manuscripts and woodblock prints. They are written in Mongolian Tibetan and Sanskrit. Some are written on gold silver and other precious materials. The monastery is a center of learning. It has a university and various colleges.

Gandantegchinlen Monastery is more than just a building. It is a living testament to faith. It embodies the strength of the Mongolian spirit. It reminds us that even in the darkest times hope endures. Even when faced with extreme challenges hope remains.
