Tucked within Etobicoke, the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish whispers tales of faith and community. The Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish isn’t just a building. It’s a living testament to the enduring power of belief, a beacon that has guided generations of worshippers. The current church structure, completed in 1964 under the watchful eye of Rev. Andrew Marynen, replaced an older structure on the same site. Before the church’s construction, the faithful gathered in a humble setting. Imagine, prior to 1865, Roman Catholic services took place in the home of Michael O’Neill, near where the CIBC now stands. The first official Mass at the Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish was celebrated on February 3, 1865, in a newly built church that cost a mere $2,000, including furnishings. A pivotal moment in the parish’s history came in 1883. Rev. Luke Allain secured a church bell, a community effort supported by people of all faiths, with the promise to ring it thrice daily. This task had previously fallen to the Fire Hall, but their bell was lost in a fire. The Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish continued to evolve. From 1886 to 1950, twenty-five priests served the community. The Catholic Women’s League (CWL) was established in April 1953 under Rev. John Karskens. The construction of the current church necessitated temporary relocation of services to the chapel at St. John Training School from August 1963 to May 1964. The first Mass in the new building was held on June 5, 1964. The solemn blessing followed on July 26, 1964, led by Archbishop Pocock. The Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish has seen countless acts of devotion over the years. Parishioners have contributed their time and talents. They enhanced the beauty and sacredness of the church, including the creation of the Grotto dedicated to Mary on the front lawn. The Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish stands as a symbol of continuity and dedication within the vibrant tapestry of Toronto.
