Lesser Town Bridge Tower

Gazing up at the Lesser Town Bridge Tower, have you ever wondered about its twin? The Lesser Town Bridge Tower isn’t alone. It’s actually a pair of towers. One is tall and imposing, reaching towards the sky. The other is smaller, almost hiding in its larger companion’s shadow. This dynamic duo guards the entrance to Lesser Town from Charles Bridge. The taller of the two, the Lesser Town Bridge Tower, was built in the latter half of the 15th century by King George of Podebrady. It replaced an older Romanesque tower and was intentionally designed to mirror the Old Town Bridge Tower at the other end of the Charles Bridge. The tower showcases the post-Hussite Gothic style. It stands tall at 43.5 meters and offers breathtaking views of Prague. The smaller tower, known as Judith’s Tower, is a remnant of the older Judith’s Bridge. This bridge was tragically destroyed by floods in 1342, paving the way for the construction of the iconic Charles Bridge. While Judith’s Tower remains closed to the public, the Lesser Town Bridge Tower welcomes visitors. Inside, an exhibition details the rich history of Charles Bridge, including stories of invading armies that once crossed it.
