High on Georgenberg, a unique star garden awaits. The Sterngarten Georgenberg isn’t your typical garden. It’s a celestial haven. It’s a place where the cosmos unfolds before your eyes.

The Sterngarten Georgenberg sits on the edge of Vienna. It offers a unique blend of nature and astronomy. This open-air planetarium was inspired by the late astronomer Oswald Thomas. His vision of a “star grove” finally took root here. The Austrian Astronomical Association, led by Professor Hermann Mucke, brought this dream to life between 1997 and 2000. They transformed this space into a free, public observatory. It’s a testament to the power of vision and community effort. Funding came from the association itself, the Ministry of Education, and even a donation drive by the magazine “Der Sternenbote.”

This isn’t just a place to gaze at the stars. The Sterngarten Georgenberg is designed to educate and inspire. It makes complex astronomical concepts tangible. Three 17-meter masts dominate the landscape. They define a plane containing the local meridian and Earth’s axis. A tilted mast, parallel to Earth’s axis, casts its shadow on a horizontal sundial. The pyramid’s platform offers a central viewing point. Its railing aligns with the “mathematical horizon.” Six sun columns mark the sunrise and sunset points during solstices and equinoxes. The north and south masts have rings marking 10-degree altitude increments. This setup allows visitors to estimate the azimuth and altitude of celestial objects.

The Sterngarten Georgenberg comes alive with regular stargazing events led by experts. These events echo the “star walks” once led by Oswald Thomas. He guided hundreds through the vineyards under darkened skies. This is more than just a park. It is a place to connect with the universe. It is a testament to human curiosity. So come, explore the Sterngarten Georgenberg. Let the universe inspire you.
