Slipping through time, imagine Stuttgart in 1975. Architect Günter Behnisch, of Behnisch & Partner, dreams of a unique kindergarten. His vision? Transforming a retired Neckar River freighter into a haven for children’s play and learning. This dream, though shelved for a time, resurfaced years later. It finally materialized as the Schiff im Weinberg, nestled within Stuttgart-Luginsland. The Schiff im Weinberg, German for “Ship in the Vineyard,” opened its unusual doors in 1990. The building stands in stark contrast to the surrounding post-war architecture. Its design, reminiscent of Behnisch’s original vision, draws heavily from nautical motifs. A pointed bow, a central flagpole rising from within, and round, porthole-like windows all contribute to the ship-like appearance. The Schiff im Weinberg’s architecture blends elements of deconstructivism, a style known for challenging conventional forms. Angled walls create nooks and crannies, perfect hiding spots only accessible to the small stature of children. Behnisch intentionally moved away from rigid, functional kindergarten designs. He wanted to create an “Ark,” offering children a world touched by whimsy and imagination. This playful, unconventional approach earned the Schiff im Weinberg recognition and awards. It also secured its place as a unique example of Behnisch’s work, showcasing his signature style. Today, the Schiff im Weinberg stands as a protected cultural monument. It’s a testament to Behnisch’s innovative spirit, a whimsical ship forever anchored in Stuttgart’s vineyard landscape.
