Time stood still. The Mauzoleum Szustrów in Warsaw’s Morskie Oko Park stood before us. A small structure yet captivating. Built in 1899 it served as the family tomb of the Szustrów family. Imagine a time when Mokotów was a village. The Szustrów manor house was surrounded not by a park but by a wild landscape. Burial near one’s birthplace was customary among wealthy families. The Mauzoleum Szustrów wasn’t just for Sunday strolls. It was a place for occasional masses for the souls of departed ancestors. A marble altar stood inside where the Szustrów family gathered not only on All Souls’ Day.

The Mauzoleum Szustrów’s history is also a story of its decay. The romantic setting changed drastically. Mass tree felling during the occupation transformed the green surroundings into a desolate gray field. This wasn’t due to negligence by Tadeusz Szustrów the last of the family. He allowed the tree cutting knowing it would help the local population survive the harsh winter of 1939. This act wasn’t appreciated after the war. He was dispossessed like other pre-war landowners. The Mauzoleum became a neglected relic. Children played there during the day. Young people gathered for drinks in the evenings. Renovations in the 70s and 80s were superficial. Their effects are barely visible today.

The recent renovation aimed to restore the mauzoleum’s former glory. A fragment of pre-war Warsaw’s atmosphere is being recreated. Water and the salts it carried caused significant damage. The plaster and paint layers were destroyed. Once decorative stone and metal elements are now only a memory. Experts identified the causes as a lack of horizontal and vertical insulation. Moisture seeped through a leaky roof and damaged external stairs. Piecemeal repairs decades ago only worsened the damage. Cheap cement plasters accelerated the deterioration of the facade.

The Mauzoleum Szustrów stands as a testament to family history. It endured war and neglect. Yet its story continues. It stands renewed a small jewel in Warsaw’s history. Its quiet dignity speaks volumes. The ghosts of the Szustrów family might be pleased. Their final resting place is restored to a semblance of its former beauty. We should leave this place quietly. This small structure whispers tales of family devotion resilience and the passage of time. Reflect on its story. The Mauzoleum Szustrów deserves our respect.
