“Modernize and renovate” is the slogan for Shepherd Field. This field has seen many changes. Shepherd Field is more than just an open space. It’s a place with history and a bright future.
Shepherd Field has a master plan project. Its goal is to modernize the soccer field and track. It also aims to connect the field with Shepherd Elementary School. A new playground for all age groups will be added.
Construction started in May 2011 and finished in October 2011. The improvements include seating and a shade structure. A new walking and jogging track was installed. New fencing and perimeter trees were added. Landscaping was part of the renovation. A parcourse with adult fitness equipment was installed. An under-12 soccer field was created. The field also got ADA access.
Shepherd Field features a soccer field. A running track surrounds it. Shepherd Elementary School sits next to the field. Playground equipment is located near the school. A hill separates the track, field, school and playground.
The field is open to the public until dusk. It offers outdoor basketball and a football and soccer field. Open space invites visitors for walks or jogs. Picnics are welcome. Amenities include a playground and seating. Picnic tables and drinking fountains are available. The playground has some shade and a synthetic rubberized surface. Trash cans are provided.
Shepherd Field’s address is 7800 14th Street NW. You can reach it by bus #S4. Walk east on Kalmia Road for two blocks. Turn right onto 14th Street. The field will be at the end. Sadly, it is not metro accessible.
Shepherd Parkway is nearby. It was the first land acquired for a Fort Drive in 1927. This aimed to connect Civil War defenses around the city. Though the parkway was never completed, the land remains open space. Alexander Robey Shepherd was Washington’s second governor. He may be the parkway’s namesake.
During the Civil War, the parkway was used for fortifications and military roads. Fort Carroll and Fort Greble were built here. Fort Carroll protected the cavalry depot. Fort Greble protected the Potomac River.
Today, Shepherd Parkway covers 205.51 acres. It features mature trees. Community organizations are working to clean and restore it. Shepherd Parkway is administered by National Capital Parks-East.
Shepherd Field and Shepherd Parkway offer different experiences. Both contribute to the area’s history and recreation. Whether it’s sports, play or a walk, Shepherd Field welcomes everyone. It continues to evolve. It remains a valuable community asset.
