A ripple of unease, a tremor of fear. That’s what you might feel standing before The Awakening. It’s as if the very ground beneath our feet is trying to shake off a terrible burden. The Awakening isn’t just a sculpture. It’s a visceral experience. J. Seward Johnson Jr. crafted this colossal figure, a giant struggling to break free from the earth’s grip. It’s a monumental work of art, and yet, it’s also deeply personal. Each of us can relate to that feeling of being trapped, of fighting to emerge from something that holds us back. The Awakening was originally installed at Hains Point in Washington, D.C., in 1980. Imagine the surprise of pilots flying into National Airport, seeing this giant’s arm reaching skyward. The sculpture was eventually moved to National Harbor, Maryland, its current home. Here, the giant’s struggle continues, his face contorted in a silent scream, his limbs straining against the earth. The sculpture is made of five separate aluminum pieces, each buried in the ground. The right arm, reaching 17 feet high, is the most prominent. But look closer. Notice the left hand and right foot, barely breaking the surface. They hint at the immensity of the body still trapped below. The Awakening isn’t just a spectacle. It’s a story, a struggle, a moment frozen in time. It’s a reminder of our own battles, our own awakenings.
