The Konstantynów radio mast was more than just steel. It was a symbol of Poland’s broadcasting prowess. From 1974 to 1991 it dominated the landscape. Imagine a structure taller than anything you have ever seen. Until 2010 the Warsaw Radio Mast was the tallest man-made construction.
This mast was a guyed radio mast. It featured a steel framework construction. Its triangular cross section had a side length of 4.8 meters. The entire structure weighed 420 tons. Think of it as an enormous metal pyramid reaching for the sky.
Its primary function was broadcasting. The Konstantynów mast served as an aerial. It transmitted long waves at 2000 kilowatts for the Polish broadcasting authority. To do this effectively it was insulated against the ground. This insulation handled a voltage of 120 kilovolts.
The mast stood in a village called Konstantynów. This village is in Płock County. It is part of the Masovian Voivodeship. Konstantynów lies near Gabin. It sits 22 kilometers south of Płock. Warsaw is 84 kilometers to the east.
Konstantynów village is quite small. Its population is around 35 people. The mast’s location was chosen for its flat terrain. This was ideal for such a tall structure.
But tragedy struck on August 8, 1991. During renovation work the Konstantynów radio mast collapsed. The collapse occurred during a guy wire exchange. The structure crumpled. Fortunately nobody died in the accident.
The collapse marked the end of an era. The Konstantynów radio mast’s reign as the world’s tallest structure ended abruptly. However its legacy remains. Several parts of the tower were repaired. They were used in other structures.
