Giovanni’s Deli World isn’t just a deli. It’s a Cape Town institution. Giovanni Esposito opened its doors on June 1 1989. He was a young and ambitious 25-year-old.
Initially, Giovanni’s was a small. Yet it was a homely deli. It offered fresh meals, local breads, cheeses and charcuterie. After two years Giovanni’s expanded. It added a coffee bar in 1991. This gave it an extra European flair.
Giovanni’s Deli World became a place to relish. People enjoy their daily ritual there. They grab a morning espresso, croissant and conversation. Then they head to work.
The foundation of Giovanni’s Deli World was family. Giovanni opened the shop with his wife Sharon. His brother Nic was by his side. His mama Rosa helped out in the kitchen.
Nicolas would help out at Giovanni’s over weekends. He also helped during school holidays. At 18 he started working full-time. Since then, they have owned and run the deli together.
Giovanni and Nicolas Esposito are behind the success. Their father Nicola Esposito started Capri Delicatessen. It was a landmark well into the 70’s in Long Street, Cape Town. So they grew up in the business.
People enjoy delicious home-cooked meals. You can get pasta or traditional meat and vegetable dishes. You can also shop for Italian delicacies. They are both imported and locally produced.
The shelves are packed with quality olive oils. Balsamic vinegar, pickles, pasta, coffees, teas, and chocolates are available. You can also find biscuits, jam, honey, dried fruit and nuts. They stock imported and local wines, fresh bread and pastries.
