A shiver ran down my spine. The sheer scale of One Island East is breathtaking. Its glass and steel facade reflects the vibrant Hong Kong skyline.

One Island East isn’t just a building. It’s a landmark. A testament to Hong Kong’s architectural prowess. Completed in 2008 it cost a staggering HK$2000000000 to build. This modern marvel rises 298 meters into the sky. That’s almost 1000 feet. It boasts 69 floors plus two basement levels.

Imagine the construction. Two earlier buildings the Melbourne Industrial Building and the Aik San Factory Building occupied the site. They were demolished to make way for this giant. Swire Properties the developer used the Land Compulsory Sale for Redevelopment Ordinance a first for the area. Gammon Construction tackled the ambitious project.

The view from its 37th and 38th floor sky lobby must be spectacular. It connects to 28 high-speed passenger elevators. Six high-speed shuttles zip between the main lobby and the sky lobby. It’s a complex network of vertical transportation.

One Island East is home to a diverse mix of tenants. Accenture AIG DBS Bank and Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group call this skyscraper home. Many international firms including Prudential plc and Zurich Insurance Group have offices here. The Securities and Futures Commission even occupies several floors.

A dramatic event marked One Island East’s history. In 2008 Tropical Storm Kammuri lashed Hong Kong. Some window panes shattered. The storm sent shards of glass into the streets. Fortunately no one was injured.

Today One Island East stands tall. A symbol of Hong Kong’s economic strength and architectural ingenuity. It’s more than just an office building. It’s a statement. A dynamic centerpiece of the Taikoo Place development in Quarry Bay. It’s a part of Hong Kong’s story. A story we’ve just begun to explore.
