The Madonna del Mare church a beacon of faith stands before you. Its story begins not with grand pronouncements but with a quiet chapel. In 1934 Franciscan friars already in Trieste since 1926 established a small place of worship. This humble beginning served the spiritual needs of the local community.

The Madonna del Mare wasn’t always as it is today. Years later in 1938 a convent was built nearby. The chapel moved to this central location. Architect Ferdinando Forlati designed the new church. It was consecrated in 1954 by Bishop Antonio Santin. The church was dedicated to the Virgin Mary under the ancient title of Stella del Mare Star of the Sea.

This wasn’t merely a construction project. It was a significant event for the area. Parts of the parishes of San Giusto Beata Vergine del Soccorso and Madonna della Provvidenza were incorporated to form the new parish. Officially established in 1969 the Madonna del Mare became a vital part of Trieste’s religious landscape.

The Franciscan friars managed the Madonna del Mare for many years. They served as its spiritual guides and protectors. However in 2019 they left Trieste. Since then the church has been under the care of the diocesan clergy. The transition marked a new chapter for the Madonna del Mare but its devotion to faith remains unchanged.

Look closely at the architecture. Note the details in the design. It reflects a specific time period and style. This wasn’t just a building it was a testament to faith. It was a symbol of the community’s devotion. Even today the Madonna del Mare continues to welcome worshippers and visitors. The church’s rich history is woven into the fabric of Trieste. It stands as a silent witness to faith community and resilience. The Madonna del Mare is more than just a building it is a living testament to spiritual devotion. It is a symbol of hope in the heart of Trieste.
