It has witnessed the very evolution of Franco da Rocha from a small district to the vibrant municipality it is today. The story begins in the early 1900s, in the then-municipality of Santana de Parnahyba. A humble chapel, dedicated to the Virgin Mary, was erected near Estação Juquery in 1908. The land was a generous gift from Ângelo and Amália Sestini. The inauguration was a grand affair, a celebration that united the entire community. A local band, led by the stationmaster, filled the air with the majestic strains of Carlos Gomes’s “Sinfonia do Guarani”. Dona Leopoldina Franco da Rocha, wife of the renowned psychiatrist Francisco Franco da Rocha, presented a statue of the Immaculate Conception to the chapel. This statue had journeyed from the former Hospício de Alienados da Rua Tabatinguera in São Paulo to its new home at the Juquery Psychiatric Hospital. In 1934, the area encompassing the chapel became part of Juquery, forming the district of Franco da Rocha. This district later evolved into the present-day Caieiras, Franco da Rocha, and Francisco Morato. A pivotal moment arrived on March 19, 1940. The small chapel was elevated to the status of a parish church. Since Franco da Rocha’s emancipation in 1944, the Paróquia Imaculada Conceição has served as the town’s principal religious center. The church has seen a procession of fifteen parish priests since 1940, each leaving their mark on this sacred space. From Father Antônio Veloso Gomes, the first parish priest, to Father Alexandre Lopes Alessio, who assumed the role in 2011, each has contributed to the rich tapestry of the Paróquia Imaculada Conceição’s history.
