A gift for Warsaw’s children, the Żyrafa Installation stands tall. This isn’t just any giraffe. This metal marvel stretches 13 meters into the sky, a whimsical giant overlooking Park Praski. Żyrafa, designed by Władysław Dariusz Frycz, arrived here in 1981. Frycz, a renowned sculptor, has pieces in prestigious collections like the Royal Łazienki and the Zachęta National Gallery of Art. Originally, city officials envisioned Żyrafa gracing the entrance of Park Praski. But plans changed. For two years, the proposal languished in bureaucratic limbo, only to be rejected. The designated spot was reserved for a future monument, the “Brotherhood of Arms”. Undeterred, the zoo resubmitted their request, proposing a new location within the park. And so, Żyrafa found its home, delighting park-goers ever since. It’s a beloved landmark, a meeting point, and a symbol of the city’s playful spirit. This magnificent metal giraffe is unique in Warsaw. Another giraffe sculpture exists, a relic from the 1968 Metal Sculpture Biennial. It’s associated with the Wola district. But our Żyrafa, in Park Praski near Aleja Kazimierza Lisieckiego “Dziadka”, is truly one of a kind.
