Did whispers ever reach you about Windsor Catholic Cemetery? It rests quietly at the corner of George Street and Hawkesbury Valley Way. Known also as St. Matthew’s Catholic Cemetery, this place holds tales as old as the 1820s. Windsor Catholic Cemetery isn’t just a collection of headstones. It’s a living chronicle of the Hawkesbury region. Archbishop Polding himself blessed the foundation stone of St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in 1836. The church registers, however, reveal burials dating back to the 1820s at Windsor Catholic Cemetery. Imagine deciphering the stories etched in weathered stone. The earliest recorded burial here at Windsor Catholic Cemetery is Patrick Cullen in 1822. The handwriting in the older registers makes accurate transcription a challenge. Names, particularly surnames, sometimes contain errors. Later registers, from the latter half of the 19th century, are occasionally illegible due to the priests’ penmanship. In 1966, management of Windsor Catholic Cemetery transferred to the local council. Sadly, during this transition, the burial registers vanished. Neither the council nor the historical society possess them now. Windsor Catholic Cemetery has been officially closed since at least 1996. New burials are rare, occurring only in pre-purchased plots with proper documentation. The stories of Windsor Catholic Cemetery, though fragmented, still echo. They speak of early settlers, prominent figures, and everyday lives. They whisper of a time long past, inviting us to remember those who rest here.
