A billion-dollar gift transformed this place. Welcome to the Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine. This isn’t just a medical school. It’s a legacy. Founded in 1887 as the Hong Kong College of Medicine for Chinese it’s one of Asia’s oldest Western medical schools. Imagine the challenges faced then introducing Western medicine to a culture steeped in traditional practices. Sir Kai Ho Kai a member of Hong Kong’s elite played a pivotal role. He convinced many that Western medicine held value.

The school became part of the University of Hong Kong in 1911. The Queen Mary Hospital nearby became a vital teaching and research base. The Japanese occupation during World War II significantly disrupted operations. Staff and students faced imprisonment. Yet the faculty persevered. It reopened after the war playing a key role in training clinicians.

This institution isn’t just about the past. It’s about groundbreaking discoveries. In 2003 HKUMed scientists were the first to identify the SARS coronavirus. Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao’s visit here in recognition was unprecedented. A State Key laboratory for emerging infectious diseases was established. It’s the first of its kind outside mainland China.

The Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine offers various undergraduate degrees. These include medicine nursing pharmacy and Chinese medicine. English is the main language of instruction except for Chinese medicine classes. In 2008 a Bachelor of Pharmacy program was added making it one of only two institutions in Hong Kong to offer this. There are also postgraduate programs. The faculty continues to adapt. It plans to introduce a four-year graduate medical program to help address Hong Kong’s doctor shortage.

The Li Ka Shing Faculty of Medicine isn’t without controversy. Former dean Lam Shiu-kum faced accusations and imprisonment relating to patient billing. These events led to significant reforms within the faculty. The renaming itself in 2006 sparked debate among students and alumni.
