What secrets does Rangihou Reserve hold? Here by the Parramatta River, Rangihou Reserve whispers tales of a shared history, a sacred ground touched by two cultures. Rangihou Reserve, once part of the Burramattagal land, became a place of learning and sorrow for Māori far from their homeland.

Rangihou Reserve’s story intertwines with Reverend Samuel Marsden, a key figure in early Australian and New Zealand history. He established a seminary here in Parramatta, mirroring the name of Rangihoua Bay in New Zealand where he delivered the first Christian sermon. Marsden envisioned Rangihou Reserve as a place to educate the sons of Māori chiefs, teaching them European ways. The seminary operated from 1815 to 1822, a brief but impactful period.

This wasn’t just a school. It was a strategic move by Marsden to foster relationships with powerful Māori leaders like Hongi Hika and Ruatara. Their presence at Rangihou Reserve symbolized a complex exchange of knowledge, trade, and unfortunately, tragedy. Many Māori students, far from their families and exposed to new diseases, perished at Rangihou. Their unmarked graves lie within this very ground, adding a layer of profound sadness to the reserve’s story. Perehiko’s son, two of Hongi Hika’s children, Tenana, Atu, Taurea…these are just some of the names we know. Their loss cast a long shadow, marked by Māori tradition with a tapu upon the land.

Rangihou Reserve echoes with the voices of those who mourned. Imagine Perehiko, receiving news of his son’s death aboard the Dromedary, his grief only slightly assuaged by the gift of a musket. Picture Te Koki, tracing the letters of his deceased son’s name in a letter, his family touching noses in a ritual of sorrow. These personal tragedies add a poignant human dimension to the broader historical narrative of Rangihou Reserve.

The seminary eventually closed. The weight of so many deaths proved unbearable. While the original seminary buildings are gone, Rangihou Reserve persists. It stands as a testament to a time of complex cultural exchange, a poignant reminder of the lives lost, and the enduring connection between Māori and this land. Rangihou Reserve isn’t just a patch of green by the river. It’s a living memory, whispering stories of connection, loss, and the enduring strength of the human spirit.
